The lush vines of the Rhone Valley finally have time to rest
Dormancy - time for the vines to zzzzzz!
November heralds the end of the growing season and the beginning of dormancy.
Dormancy, or sleep, is the normal state of vines in winter, and has an important role in a grapevine growth cycle as it helps the vine tolerate cold temperatures, and ensure bud burst and normal spring growth. This period usually starts with Autumn leaf fall and ends with the bud break in early Spring. Pruning is carried out when the vines are dormant and buds and cuttings taken at this time to be used in propagation. Tests on vines during the winter months show that there is minimal metabolic activity confirming that the plants are literally asleep .....
NOVEMBER FOCUS The Syrah Grape
Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is one of the most noblest and fashionable red wine grapes grown worldwide. In the northern Rhone valley it is the only red grape variety permitted for wine making. Its nobility comes from its ability to produce serious red wines capable of ageing majestically for decades.
The Syrah grape is known for its purple colour, its capacity for providing well structured wines with a good amount of tannins. It also brings spice aromas including black pepper to the mouth. In the southern Rhone valley, depending on AOC rules, the Syrah is usually blended with Grenache, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault grape varieties.
